What Is Glaucoma?

The structure of the eye is held together by a combination of orbital bones and pressure. At the same time, this pressure can sometimes climb too high. This is what happens when someone develops glaucoma. Glaucoma is a condition that develops when the pressure behind the eyes is too high. Some forms of glaucoma can develop quickly while others might come on more slowly. Regardless, this accelerated pressure can reach the point that it starts to threaten the structures behind the eyes such as the blood vessels and nerves. if these structures are damaged, it can lead to blindness. For this reason, it is critical for an optometry provider to treat this condition as quickly as possible.

How Does an Eye Doctor Treat Glaucoma?

If someone comes to see us at Dennis Eye Care with signs of glaucoma, the first thing we are going to do is test someone's ability to see while also checking the pressure behind the eyes. We do this using a small tool that is completely painless. If the pressure is high, we will work immediately to bring it down. That means that we will use a combination of oral medications and ocular eye drops to reduce the pressure behind the eyes.

Sometimes, surgery is necessary to relieve a blockage at the outflow tract of the eyes, which is one of the main causes of glaucoma. While it might take some time, we will do everything we can to protect the ability of our patients to see with rapid glaucoma assessments and treatments.
