How to Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a disease that affects more than ten million Americans. Like many eye conditions, it is age-related. Currently, it is not curable but research is being done that may lead to a cure in the future. Dr. Dennis of Dennis Eye Care in Murfreesboro TN keeps up to date on all the latest news on macular degeneration and he is confident that he will be able to answer your questions about this disease.

What is AMD

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition that affects the macula of the eye which is the center portion of the retina. If you think of your eye as a camera that records images, the retina is the film that sends the pictures to the optic nerve and brain for interpretation. When it is not working correctly your vision is seriously impacted. The most common type of AMD is called dry macular degeneration and accounts for up to 80% of all cases. In dry AMD the macula thins. The remainder of cases are wet macular degeneration and they are caused by leaking fluids that scar the macula.

Who is at risk for AMD

Heredity plays a role in the risk of AMD, a family history of others who have had the disease. Other risks are lifestyle issues, a diet high in saturated fats, obesity, high blood pressure, and smoking. If you are over 50 you also have an increased risk for the disease.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Your eye care professional can diagnose this condition. A thorough eye exam with the addition of some specialized tests can make an accurate diagnosis. The condition is not curable at this time but in the case of dry AMD, your eye doctor may recommend some dietary supplements and dietary changes that can improve the condition. Wet AMD can be treated with laser surgery and drugs.

If you are concerned about your eyesight, Dr. Dennis is here to answer your questions and give you a thorough eye exam. Give Dennis Eye Care in Murfreesboro TN a call at 615-848-3008 to set up an appointment.
